Subconcious Messages Through Children’s Book Choices

Subconcious Messages Through Children’s Book Choices

If you have children or work with children, you probably know they LOVE to listen to the same story over and over… and over… again. In fact, one of the earliest literacy tip posts I did on Instagram was about the benefits of repeated readings!

Pictured above are 3 books that have been on heavy repeat in our house these last few weeks. They’re all drastically different, with different characters, plots, and themes. And this variety made me wonder— do these book choices tell me anything important about my children? Would paying more attention to those choices would give me a little window about what my girls are processing or needing right now? Page 1 Kids 3-Month Subscription Giveaway

Page 1 Kids 3-Month Subscription Giveaway

Ok, everyone, you’re going to want to read this and then head to my Instagram page to enter– I’ve got a 3-month subscription to Page 1 Kids to give to one of you!

As you may have seen on my Instagram page over the last few months, back in January I applied to be, and was accepted to be, a Page 1 Kids ambassador. That meant that I received a 3-month subscription to receive their book boxes in exchange for sharing our honest thoughts and feelings on the service.

And, I gotta tell you… After receiving our first box, I was sold! One of the aspects of Page 1 Kids that makes them stand out from other children’s book subscription services (of which there are many, these days!) is that you can communicate specific requests, requirements, wishes, and/or needs with them, and they’ll find a book to fulfill what you’ve communicated! Good News! It’s Easter! by Glenys Nellist, PLUS a Giveaway!

If you were following me in December, you may have noticed that I absolutely love ‘Twas the Evening of Christmas by Glenys Nellist. She reached out to me around the same time and asked if I’d be interested in participating in a “blog hop” to help promote her newest book, Good News! It’s Easter!, and given how wonderful ‘Twas the Evening of Christmas is, I knew this would be a gem too. I eagerly said yes, and I’m here to tell you that this book doesn’t disappoint! On-the-Go Entertainment Bags

On-the-Go Entertainment Bags

When our oldest was about a year old, I saw a really cute tutorial (on Pinterest, I’m sure…) about turning a toiletry travel kit into a restaurant bag for small children. It would hold wipes, straws, kids-sized utensils, disposable bibs, and maybe some stickers, crayons, and paper… I tried to make that, though mine admittedly wasn’t nearly as cute as the one in the tutorial. The idea stuck, though, and almost 5 years later, and we still have an on-the-go bag! Continue reading “On-the-Go Entertainment Bags”

Our Caldecott Medal Opinions 2019

Our Caldecott Medal Opinions 2019

The Academy Awards of children’s literature, the American Library Association’s youth media awards, were announced Monday morning… A few followers had asked me to hold off on sharing my thoughts, because they were still reading through hopeful award winners for their own mock votes with their children, but given how absolutely excited I was for the day to come and to see what won each award, I’ve held off as long as I can! A Little About Me

A Little About Me

The above photo is one my wonderful husband snapped when he got home from work one day last week, and it’s truly typical in our house and not staged!

I am a former third grade teacher (10 year in the classroom, almost all in third grade) turned stay-at-home mother to two amazing girls (ages 5 and almost 3). When I was in the classroom, my husband would frequently ask when my classroom library would be finished… Umm, as long as they keep making new and wonderful books, it’ll never be finished!

Now as a mom, I still love reading, enjoying, and learning from books as much as I ever did. My friends and family frequently ask for book recommendations or help with literacy development and understanding, so I thought a website like this would be an easy way to share and archive my thoughts.

Welcome to my website, and thanks for following me on this journey! Below, please comment with any topics or ideas around which you’d love some book recommendations!
