Easy Ways for Parents to Prepare Kids to Learn to Read and Write

Easy Ways for Parents to Prepare Kids to Learn to Read and Write

If you’ve followed me for any length of time, you’ve likely picked up on the fact that I’m not at all worried about teaching my girls to read before they start kindergarten (and, then, I’m not worried about teaching them myself… I trust our teachers to let me know if we need to work on anything from home!). But, I know that kindergarten readiness is at the forefront of many parents’ minds over the course of that year leading up to kindergarten. Step back and take a relaxing breath, though, because if you follow me, you’re likely already doing all that you need to do to help your child be ready to read and write when the time comes!

Our Favorite Books About Elections, Democracy, and America

Our Favorite Books About Elections, Democracy, and America

All right, everyone, we’re just under a month away from Election Day 2020! Does anyone else remember going to the polls with your parents as a kid? I have truly fond memories of Election Days as a child (and not just because we got the day off of school!). I learned so much through those days…

So, use this Election Day as a chance to teach your children about our election process. Remember to vote, and take your kids with you (or let them watch you fill out your ballot at home). While you’re at it, use this time to talk with your kids about America, our democracy, our various elected officials and their roles in our lives, and the issues important to you and those around you.

Below, I’ve shared a few of my favorite titles about our country and our democracy in action, and of course, our presidents and presidential elections. Check out the titles here, and try to get your hands on a few between now and November 3.

I’m Sticking With You by Smriti Prasadam-Halls

I’m Sticking With You by Smriti Prasadam-Halls

Our school as a delightful birthday book program, through which you can make a monetary donation to the library and the librarian will use that money to buy new books for the library. These books are designated “birthday books,” marked with a special birthday book note in the front, and given to your child first, to keep for as long as he/she wants before they are entered into the regular library rotation. Our new five-year-old received her birthday books on her birthday (our librarian even makes housecalls for students who are learning at home or have birthdays on weekends!!!), and they are delightful! Today, I’m sharing one of her birthday books (a book that was completely new to me, so that was unusual and exciting): I’m Sticking With You by Smriti Prasadam-Halls, illustrated by Steve Small.

Recent Favorites from a Second Grader #1

Recent Favorites from a Second Grader #1

Well, it’s happened… Now that our older daughter is reading chapter books rather ravenously, I can’t keep up… When she was reading picture books, I always knew what they were about and how I felt about them, but now that she’s onto chapter books, I just can’t. But, I know many of you have readers who are also moving into reading more and more chapter books independently. So, every month or so, I’ll have our older daughter (a seven-year-old second grader) tell you about 4 or 5 of her favorite books lately (and, I’ll add thoughts too if I’ve read them and have anything that you need to know as a parent). Up today, we’ve got six of her favorite reads (chosen from read alouds, audiobooks, and independent reads) from late August and September!

Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka

Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka

Okay, there is just enough time left in September for me to highlight one more book from my list of picture books that model including others. And y’all, this one is a must-read. Though it was originally published in 1993, I didn’t discover it until a few years into my teaching career, but once I found it, I read it to my students every single year. And now I revisit it frequently with my girls. If you don’t know Yo! Yes? by Chris Raschka yet, please read on to learn more about it — and then find a way to get your hands on it!
