Books About Moving

Books About Moving

Last fall, a follower asked me to recommend some books to read with her children to help prepare them for an upcoming move. I gathered some ideas (with many recommendations from you all!) and passed along a small list. I continued to add to it, though, trying to read through some of your recommendations. Then, this spring, a few other friends asked me for the same list. So, I decided it was time to put some effort into it and create my official list of recommended books about moving!

Early Readers Written in Dialogue (aka Elephant and Piggie Style!)

Early Readers Written in Dialogue (aka Elephant and Piggie Style!)

A follower recently asked me for recommendations for books similar to Elephant and Piggie— yes, she wanted that early reading level, but she was NOT looking for silly, funny, friendship books. Instead, she wanted books written in the same dialogue format, as their kindergartener likes to do “theater” of the Elephant and Piggie books at night… (side note— this kind of reader’s theater is wonderful for developing fluency!).

So, up today, books written in the same dialogue style, for the same early reading level, as the beloved Elephant and Piggie books! Continue reading “Early Readers Written in Dialogue (aka Elephant and Piggie Style!)”

Rainbow and Color Books

Rainbow and Color Books

Okay, everyone, have you checked out my friend Courtney’s (rockstar mama of two and incredibly pediatric occupational therapist) Tinker Kits though her OT OuTside account? If not, she makes amazing Tinker Kits you can buy — her creative activities allow you to connect with your children AND help them develop self-help, reading, writing, and play skills! Courtney and I thought it would be fun to collaborate when she releases new Tinker Kits, so today, I’m bringing you our favorite rainbow and color books to go with her March Tinker Kit. And if you don’t have a rainbow Tinker Kit, you’ll still love this list! Maybe you’re talking about rainbows for St. Patrick’s Day, or because it’s springtime and you’ve been seeing a lot of rainbows, or because like many young children, your kiddos just love rainbows! If any of the above are true for you, then check out the recommendations below. Continue reading “Rainbow and Color Books”

Our 25(ish) Favorite Christmas Books (2018)

Our 25(ish) Favorite Christmas Books (2018)

I just spent a LONG time sitting in the middle of a big pile of Christmas books, trying to pick our very favorites… And it turns out that narrowing down our beloved Christmas books into a reasonable recommendation list was a really hard task (the picture above shows the many books that survived the first round of cuts)! There are classic Christmas books that should belong in every collection, like The Polar Express or The Best Christmas Pageant Ever, but you probably already know or own them. They’re not on this list. My girls also have Christmas favorites featuring beloved characters, like Maple and Willow, Olivia, Bear, and the Construction Site team, but if you know and love the series, you probably already know and love the Christmas book. You also won’t see them on this list. Instead, I hope this list can help you find some Christmas books that you didn’t already know! So, without further ado, here is the Children’s Lit Love 2018 list of 25 favorite Christmas books (with a little cheating…)! Continue reading “Our 25(ish) Favorite Christmas Books (2018)”

Books for Fostering Kindness and Empathy

Books for Fostering Kindness and Empathy

Today, November 13, 2018, is World Kindness Day! As Jamie C. Martin wrote in Give Your Child the World, “Books help your family grasp on a new level that what we have in common with our worldwide neighbors far outweighs what separates us… It naturally develops compassion… because we all have similar needs, hopes, and desires. Great stories build an empathic foundation that leads to a life of service and concern for others” (p. 26). Continue reading “Books for Fostering Kindness and Empathy”
